Coffee Morning at the Scores Hotel, 76 The Scores, St Andrews Fife KY16 9BB 10:30 for 11 a.m.

Wednesday 24 April 2019

We are delighted to welcome Mr Tom Reid of Kirkcaldy to speak to us about Fife’s doocots. He has a wealth of knowledge on his subject which he is happy to share with us so that we can fully appreciate these structures, in their various forms, that we see on our travels through the Kingdom of Fife.

Following National Service in the Royal Engineers, Mr Reid joined George Wimpey as a draughtsman at their Head Office in Hammersmith. A couple of years later, he was offered the opportunity to spend a week at the Edinburgh office on a rushed job. After short spells in the Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle drawing offices, he returned to Edinburgh where the intended three week stay stretched out and Tom happily accepted the invitation to stay. He eventually moved to Kirkcaldy, naturally to a Wimpey house. He later worked for the Prison Building Service and then for Serco at Rosyth and Faslane.

In retirement, Tom got a camera and instead of drawing new buildings began to photograph old ones, latterly focussing on doocots.

His talk will cover the history of pigeon farming and its geographical spread. The various styles of doocots, their design and construction, and their varying features will be discussed. An  account of the rise of the rise and subsequent decline of the doocot will follow.

We hope you will join us for what will be a fascinating look at these little architectural gems and you will look with a new eye at Fife’s many doocots including Crail’s restored beehive doocot, the ‘fuie’ nesting box construction at Kellie Castle, and the doocot at Kingsbarns Distillery that has found a new use, now guarding their first cask of whisky.

TRANSPORT
Parking in St Andrews can be difficult, but please note that we have avoided the Fife school holidays and the Easter weekend, so we hope you will not have trouble finding a spot. There are several free parking spaces on the Scores, and many more Pay & Display spaces beside the Golf Museum. Please note that no change is given by the machines. There is also free parking not far away at Petheram Bridge.
If you choose to travel by public transport, the Scores Hotel is an easy walk from the bus station.

Raffle
As is customary at our Annual Coffee Morning, we invite our members and their guests to participate in our raffle. If you have any unwanted gifts or treasures that would make a suitable raffle.

For registration form please look under Documents on this website.
